Underpainting and Glazing in Oils
Beginning Track
Students will learn the skills necessary to create an oil painting of contemporary realism using updated variations of the underpainting and glazing technique used by the great masters. It is an accessible step-by-step approach that allows the artist to separate the application of color, value, shape, and edge quality and is perfect for those who either have struggled to feel satisfied with looser styles of painting or simply yearn to create their own luminous realistic masterpiece. The workshops divide the process into four sequential parts and students are strongly encouraged to take the classes sequentially to have the best experience.
Studio Track
Students who have learned the basics of underpainting and glazing will work with the instructor to explore imagery of their own choice, experiment with different underpainting styles, improve their painting technique, hone their artistic voice, and generate amazing reference photos. Please come to the first session with an image of your choice transferred onto canvas or panel.

Bold Botanicals in Watercolor
This three-part workshop will guide students through the use of watercolor to paint a single, beautiful flower in close-focus realism. Students will find that when viewed closely, the leaves and petals of a botanical subject are amazing, abstract shapes. Students will be able to paint a striking, single flower that glows with light and dances with movement. This workshop is a great opportunity to take unique botanical reference images and paint a masterpiece.
Process Demostration
1. Draft the image onto gessoed panel or canvas. Cover the surface with a mix of Indian Yellow and Liquin as a toning layer (imprimatura). Other colors can be used for this toning layer to get other effects. The toning layer provides protection for the drawing and a sense of color and light to the final painting. Allow to dry to the touch.
2. Complete the underpainting in gray scale, using a mixture of Alizarin Crimson, Viridian, and Titanium White. Underpaintings can also be done in a pastel color palette (for a bright final work) or Burnt Umber (for an old world mellow and warm effect).
3. .Build the background one transparent color at a time. Colors like Winsor Blue, Diazanon Purple, Viridian, and Alizarin Crimson build beautiful and complex darks that are an excellent substitute for black.
34 This background is Diazanon Purple and Viridian on top of Winsor Blue.
5. Add color by painting successive passes of transparent paints. Never use opaque colors in this step. Paint color transparency is noted on the tube. This step builds luminescence into the work.
6. In the final passes, deepen colors and add white higlights. Checks values against the reference image.
